Are our creature comforts killing us

After visiting numerous museums in country Australia, it dawned upon me how much easier our lives have become.
While there is an endless stream of potential suitors to make our lives easier, are we better off??

Going back to the 19th century, there were no labour saving devices, in fact up to the 1940′s there was little in comparision to today.
When the average household grew their own food and meat, the average home demanded much higher energy expenditure, no dish washers, dryers, preparing food involved carry a large cast iron pot that sat above an open fire (retrieving & cutting wood), butter was made by hand.
Water was retrieved from a well by bucket, any form of cleaning was performed using good old elbow grease, no grime fighting chemicals to be seen.

Unlike today we we hope in the car to drive 5kms to the supermarket, by our 2-3 days worth of groceries. A lot of our work involves sitting in front of a computer while communiting by car or public transport.
Just in case we don’t have the time to cook, we can go to one of many take away shops, or better still order from a drive through but wait don’t forget home deliver, just make a call from the cordless phone to yellow pages direct to find your local take away.
We relax in front of the TV while using a reverse cycle air conditioner to cool us.
Our kitchen is full of everything to help us chop, dice, mixed, not much physical exertion involved.
Don’t forget the gardning chores, electric leav blowers, lawn mowers, whipper snippers, electric headge cutters, it goes on and on.
Can this be a contributing factor to our increasing waistlines???
