Are you really sick?

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

I was having a chat to a friend about the flu and how some people are more predisposed to getting the flu than others.

I found it unusal that over the years through my own personal experience and anecdotally self employed people tend to get sick less often, or rather they work when they have the cold.

Is it a coincidence that self employed people are generally healthier or is there less room in their life to get sick or to put it another way, miss work.

For a self employed person, no work = no pay.
Is their a secret epidemic of self employed people getting pneumonia or more severe illnesses because they choose to work rather than stay home.

Is there a motivating factor here?
Maybe the consequence of not getting up to attend a fitness training sessions is losing the cost of the session, minimal loss of money OR stay in bed, mmmm tough decision.

The self employed person is committed to work because of the repercussions of not working are greater than working while being sick, mortgage payments, credit cards, personal loans, a holiday at the end of the year or maybe letting their clients down.

Maybe the self employed person knows that being sick isn’t an option so they are not focussed either consciously or unconsciously of getting the dreaded “lurgy”

So are we really sick or creating the environment for sickness to occur?

Uk leading way in obesity initiatives

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Under the government’s Green Travel initiative, those people riding to work could qualify for savings of up to 50% on a new bike!

Under the Cycle to Work scheme as part of the you can get a tax-free bike, people an use the bike to commute, keep fit and do you bit for the environment all in one fell swoop.

The only requirements are that you are in full time employment and on PAYE and your boss must have the company registered to qualify for the tax breaks being offered.

Mmmm, with Melbourne’s grislock getting worse & the only short sighted solution being more freeways, can this be a viable option?

Is work destroying our bodies

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I was speaking with a physio last week about the most common injuries he was treating.
Maybe knee complaints, lower back etc but no, the majority of his patients centered around work related injuries.

As the work place is becoming more centered around eye balling a computer screen, so too has the growth in neck & shoulder problems.
Staying in the same positions for hours on in, rounded shoulders, forwarding leaning of the head, sloutching, poor posture are all by products of our more sedentary lifestyle.

How far did you walk to the Brunswick music festival?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

There are many ways we can exercise without having to change our lives drastically.
Take for example driving the car, it amazes me people will drive their cars endlessly around in circles to get within 50 meters of their final destination.
With ample parking at Princess Park in North carlton, people still persisted in finding that elusive parking spot as close as possible to the Brunswick Music Festival.

Childhood obesity, are parents contributing

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

While visiting many national Parks in Australia I couldn’t help but notice the food that was given to children as a normal part of their diet.
Children who were clearly overweight joined their parents in eating a packet of chips washed down with a tetra pack sugary fruit juice.
I witnessed this on numerous occasions, was this a special holiday diet or part of their regular daily food intake?
Are parents normalising what is considered a healthy weight when they are in fact overweight or obese and the children have a similar body type.
Yes this is an extremely small sample group but I challenge anyone who was a child in the 1950-60′s whether there parents provided lunch & snacks of confectionary health bars, sugary juice (in many instances contaning more sugar than carbonated soft drinks) and the endless variety of fatty, sugary food availble in modern supermarkets.
What every happened to Salad sandwiches, fresh fruit and water.
Maybe not as appealing but children who are exposed to confectionery on the basis of being a treat may show greater respect for food as an adult.
Instant gratification in the culinary sense leaves little appreciation of the wide range of tastes available from less processed foods.
Is offering a chocolate bar or chips as a treat on an irregualr basis such a bad thing?
Is given your child everything they desire better in the long term?
