A fatty diet, does it still exist?

Friday, January 18th, 2008

With all of the education around about eating a diet high in fats I was surprised that families still eat pork that is deep fried comprising of only the skin and pure fat, this was kept company with a fried egg and extremely fatty steak.
This was a recent experience, not to sound ungreatful for being invited for dinner but we must have a more sensible approach to our diet.

Are our creature comforts killing us

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

After visiting numerous museums in country Australia, it dawned upon me how much easier our lives have become.
While there is an endless stream of potential suitors to make our lives easier, are we better off??

Going back to the 19th century, there were no labour saving devices, in fact up to the 1940′s there was little in comparision to today.
When the average household grew their own food and meat, the average home demanded much higher energy expenditure, no dish washers, dryers, preparing food involved carry a large cast iron pot that sat above an open fire (retrieving & cutting wood), butter was made by hand.
Water was retrieved from a well by bucket, any form of cleaning was performed using good old elbow grease, no grime fighting chemicals to be seen.

Unlike today we we hope in the car to drive 5kms to the supermarket, by our 2-3 days worth of groceries. A lot of our work involves sitting in front of a computer while communiting by car or public transport.
Just in case we don’t have the time to cook, we can go to one of many take away shops, or better still order from a drive through but wait don’t forget home deliver, just make a call from the cordless phone to yellow pages direct to find your local take away.
We relax in front of the TV while using a reverse cycle air conditioner to cool us.
Our kitchen is full of everything to help us chop, dice, mixed, not much physical exertion involved.
Don’t forget the gardning chores, electric leav blowers, lawn mowers, whipper snippers, electric headge cutters, it goes on and on.
Can this be a contributing factor to our increasing waistlines???

Obesity trend starts with preschoolers

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

With a national study finding a disturbing trend amongst preschoolers for obesity, where does it alll start?

Is it too much inactivity, the changing eating patterns amongst preschoolers, increased junk food consumption.

By the time the preschoolers reach adolescence, it is extremely difficult to lose the weight during adulthood.

Is the ratio of junk food advertisements children are exposed too high, are there too many hours spent eyeballing the TV.

Have the young generation become a victim of passive entertainment whereby the internet, DVD’s, TV, video games etc becoming a substitute for the old fashioned outdoor activities of playing with their friends, riding bikes or tricycles etc.

Are you too fat, are we fueling Anorexia

Monday, July 30th, 2007

It is very disturbing that there has also been an increase in childhood anorexia nervosa over the past 10 years.

So what has fuelled the increase in teenage girls feeling guilt ridden when they are within acceptable body fat levels?
While reading the mandatory trashy mags while waiting at the checkout, I noticed the headline “Are they too fat” referring to paparrazi photos of Holywood actors.

If anything, I found the actors to be slightly under weight, yet these publications continually promote unhealthy body images.
Would a young, image conscious teenager be swayed by such a headline?

New research into Obesity & Cancer

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

The Cancer Council of Victoria has recently conducted research into the relationship between cancer and Obesity.

With Australia’s obesity rate spiralling out of control, there is the incrasing need to address this issue.
With this new research, hopefully this will place additional pressure on people in this segment of the population.
