Are you super sizing your home for a McMansion? Is keeping up with the Jones compromising the work life balance, stressed, depressed unhappy

Monday, March 30th, 2009

With the pressure on to have the latest & greatest, is the McMansion style home placing unnecessary stress on our lives.
One common reason for divorce/separation is financial pressure with mortgage stress not helping the situation.

We are working longer hours and taking less time off.
Is Australia at risk of becoming known as a nation of workaholics?
The Australian governent has even introduced a campaign called “No Leave, No Life” to encourage workers to used accrued annual leave.

Alcopops tax rejected by Senate, Family First senator Steve Fielding supports opposition meaning $300M refund & pre mixed drinks now cheaper

Friday, March 20th, 2009

A very disappointing result last night in the Senate with the Alcopops legislation being overturned by the opposition, lead by Family First senator Steve Fielding who was using his balance of power to push through his own agenda of stopping alcohol advertising during daytime sporting broadcasts (not such a bad idea I must add). Unfortunately Fielding’s agenda didn’t gain any traction so he supported the oppositions stance of refusing to back the 70 per cent tax on pre-mixed drinks from the Alcopop’s legislation.

With youth alcohol binging getting to epidemic levels, a sensible approach needs to be taken. I find it very interesting that the Distillers and those companies effected by the Alcopop’s legislation have indicated that the $300M collected in taxes since April can be kept by the government to be used appropriately.

Ready to drink beverages are extremely sweet and easy to drink as the alcoholic taste is masked by the sugar and sweeteners. An easy way to get the taste for drinking in large quantities without realising the amount of alcohol consumed. Try giving beer or wine to a teenager and see whether they can drink a glass net a lone a litre at their first sitting.
I wish I could say goodbye to $300M and not be too concerned, is there a possibility that the growth of this market segment unabated by huge taxes will bring in substantial revenues in the years to come.
I remember the $20billion payout from the tobacco companies in the US civil suits years ago was relatively cheap for the 4 tobacco companies divided by four over 20 years, hardly enough to make there future uneconomically viable.

Listen to your body, feeling tired & run down? It’s ok to miss that social engagement: go to bed early, too often we push ourselves too hard

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Our lives are being pushed to the point we we must account for every minute of every day, non stop; work, exercise & social engagements, 24/7 communication via email, sms & web social networking sites, it’s ok to chill out every now & then.
Constantly pushing yourself will eventually catch up with you. A cold may develop into a nasty flu, you may be bed bound for days which in reality is a great deal longer than simply taking some time out from your busy schedule.

A personal trainer, Paul “PJ” James attempts to eat his way from 80kg to 110kg to understand obesity, sensationalism or honorable cause?

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Are the healths risks associated with eating a diet rich in saturated fats, sugar and other nasty artery clogging food stuffs worth the risk to his liver and other organs?

‘I have always been telling my clients who have come through the gym’s doors that weight loss shouldn’t be difficult, but it has reached the point where I can’t relate and by doing this it should make me a better personal trainer,’ he said.

Doctors in this country though have pointed out the dangers of such rapid weight gain and loss.

‘Weight gain of this kind could cause Mr James to get visceral fat around his organs such as his heart and liver, increasing the dangers of diabetes and high blood pressure,’ says Dr Matt Capehorn of the National Obesity Forum.

I find it confusing that rapid weight gain followed by loss can give one an insight into understanding how overweight/obese can lose weight.

A highly conditioned personal trainer has missed the most important part of losing weight, the psychological element.
It’s like saying that a new Ford sedan can get 1,000,000kms from the engine just because a Taxi drivers does.
The missing point is the car is running 24/7 with all the fluids and filters changed regularly.
Your average Ford Sedan is driven for 30kms to work, the engines cools and it doesn’t reach operating temperature until the drive back home, similarly no moisture builds in the engine if driven constantly.

Do you think that Paul “PJ” James is more akin to the average sedan or the Taxi work horse?

High heels- Fashion statement or Fashion slave? The side effects aren’t great, spines goes out of optimal alignment, contracted muscles…

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

As high heels get, well higher, are the risks to your body worth it?
Keeping yourself in a permanent tippie toes position places stress on:
1.Calf muscles, continually being contracted while pointing the feet down (plantaflexion)
2.Strain on the Achilles tendon from constant contraction (see above point)
3.Spinal alignment changes, your body leans forward, changing the position that your hips are sitting
4.Knee strains from above situation
Solution: Save your body and sacrifice some fashion cred
