Are you guided by Fit Me or Lazy Me?

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

We all have those conflicting little voices in our mind that are sometimes at ease while at other times are in conflict, I like to think of them as “Fit Me” & “Lazy Me”

Maybe it’s the start of Spring, for the last couple of months, Lazy Me has been in control, plenty of doona time (sleeping in), eating the wrong foods with little exercise.
Suddenly, the weather improves, only 8 weeks to summer, how will I fit into that bikini!!!!

What happens next, Fit Me takes control, suddenly you’re more motivated, you change your diet, stop snacking on chocolate & chips, regulate your wine consuption, eat more vegies & fruit, life is wonderful. You feel better, have more energy, Fit Me is now in control, feeling strong & confident.

A few days pass, maybe a week or 2, you step on the scales and notice a decrease in your weight, yeah haa!!!
Week number 2, another decrease in your weight, then week three, no change in your weight, mmmm what’s going on.
Now Lazy Me pocks their head up & starts whispering into your ear at 5.30am when you usually get up to go to fitness training “Stay in bed, it’s cold out there, besides your’re not losing any weight any way”

Now it’s exercise day number 2, the same thing happens, except this time there is no guilt, you’re ok about staying in bed.
You step on the bathroom scales, “Oh no, an extra kg”
Now lazy me is getting stronger while Fit me is fighting a losing battle.

Before you no it, Lazy me is calling the shots, you stay in bed & before long any weight loss has been replaced with weight gain, you’re feeling more lethargic, getting more upset about the weight gain, now Lazy Me dictates that unhealhly lifestyle that you powerless to control.

Lazy Me & Fit Me are constantly trying to keep the other one happy, Lazy me knows exercising will keep Fit Me happy while Fit Me knows sleeping in keeps Lazy me happy.

The real key is what is the underlining factor behind Fit Me & Lazy Me>

Become focused on your health

It’s amazing how once we attach importance upon something be it an object or an idea, we will do everything that is possible to attaining that object or idea.

How often have you said to yourself that you must have that new car, dress, pair of shoes, a job, new phone, a bigger car, newest Ipod, Iphone, updating the car etc.
Have you ever found yourself being totally focussed on purchasing that particular item, working extra hours, looking at ways of generating additional income, perhaps doing a short course to increase your skill set for that pay rise.

These are all driving factors with the motivation being attaining the particular item.
Yet at the end of the day, is it really that important to update all the appliances in the kitchen, or the kitchen itself for that matter? yet will place importance on achieving these goals.

Imagine if you placed the same level of importance on your health, that no matter what you went for that run in the morning, or down to that aerobics class.

Maybe a strange comparision but on the weekend I started throwing a stick for a friends dog.
Before I started, there where 1000′s of sticks on the ground with no particular stick holding any value to the dog.
The moment I approach an indesriminate stick, it suddenly became the object of desire for the dog.
The dog, lets call him “bubby” suddenly found attached importance to that stick, even though the stick was no different to any other stick, Bubby would go crazy fighting with me to regain control of the stick.
What are the sticks in your life?
Maybe try replacing the sticks in your life with your health.

Why are you eating?

It’s 3pm, you’re at work, the eye lids are getting heavy, only 2 hours to go.
So what next?, a hit of caffiene or maybe straight to the vending machine or the biscuit tin.
Are you really hungry or is your stomach in the habit of expecting a caffiene/choclate hit at 3pm.
A lot of our behaviours are driven by habits or emotions.
The tough part is changing the habit or our emotional state.

Quite often there is an association between a particular emotion and food, maybe your feeling a little lacklustre, a little down so a natural reaction may be to head for a choclate bar, over a long period of time this association becomes a habit.

Persistence overides Resistence

There was a great story about a para Olympian on Australian story last night that is a testiment to the human spirit and the ability to keep focused in the face of adversity.

After a freak bicycle accident made him a paraplegic in 1986, nothing was going to stand in the way of achieving his dreams, the successful completion of the Hawian ironman, crossing the English channel.

We all having reasons for not completing our goals however do we really have a genuine reason or are we justifying our lack of commitment and dedication?

Everyday people say it’s too hard to exercise, to change my lifestyle, to find the time to exercise, to adopt a healthier lifestyle…..

De Rush

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Our lives are getting more crazy, what we need to learn is how to “DE Rush” slow down, relax a little, stop accounting for every milli second of our lives with an activity, call this peson, meet this person, return emails, sms person back, read paper, read/screen emails, check voice messagers etc.
The latest telstra ad shows exactly the exact opposite of how we don’t want our lives to end up.

With the constant flurry of electronic information we need to switch off.
