Belief System Tsunami survivor – you can NOT you can’t

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Great story about Tsunami survivor and his belief system, it’s a case of you can NOT you can’t.

Faced with certain death, motivating factor

Faced with certain death after the surf tour boat he was on capsized, lawyer Rob Marino’s only option was to squeeze from a tiny porthole or concede the immediate fate of death.

Faced with this situation, Rob decided to choose life and managed to squeeze from this tiny orifice.
From Rob “You are left with two choices, you either make an effort to survive but I didn’t want to do”

Quite often the motivating factor can determine whether you make the effort or not to reach your goals, living is a pretty good motivating factor.

When we say sticking to a diet or an exercise program is too hard, we are really saying that we don’t won’t to, ultimately it comes down to the deeper reasons why we resist, a behavior or thought process that was created in the past. This is often not addressed and can lead to failure to achieve your weight lose or fitness goals.

However when faced with a life or death situation, suddenly survival becomes a motivating factor and our deeper reasons for resistance are over ruled by instinct.

If you don’t undertake the prescribed weight loss or exercise program, you will not die, although a lifetime of abuse can lead to cardiovascular and heart disease.

However throw into the equation if you don’t stop drinking alcohol or smoking that you will die within 6 months or alternatively you are a father of 2 young children and you risk having a heart attack, then suddenly the motivating force is once again a fatal outcome.

So maybe mentally you may not be ready, it’s all too hard or hopefully you aren’t faced with a life or death situation to achieve a change in your thinking.

What will they say at your funeral?

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

An interesting story about the what someone would say about you at your funeral.

A friend attended her mothers funeral over the weekend, 500 people attended from the local town and interstate, only 5 years earlier her father passed away with 700 people attending.

Both parents were very active with there local schools, long after the kids had left, the local choir, fund raising drives and community projects, they were both very respected and valued.

As she started talking to an older gentleman about the eulogy and what a wonderful life that her mother had they got chatting about what they did for work.

The older gentleman, lets call him Jack, he said that he had a massive career change 20 years earlier following an earlier conversation he had regarding what would be said at his funeral. Jack had a extremely senior position with Microsoft that was extremely demanding but paid accordingly.

Well Jack commented that his eulogy would make reference to what a wonderful project manager he was, that he delivered the projects on time and on budget, that he was committed to the company and was devoted employee.

From that moment Jack decided to make a change to his life, he immediately resigned finally acknowledging that work only represented part of his life, that it also included his wonderful family, loving wife, fantastic children and an interest in golf and always wonderful things that will push aside to accommodate his 10 to 15 hour days.

Within a short period Jack found employment with a company that acknowledged that work only represented part of a person’s life, that the company would invest time and resources into helping develop the employees personal lifestyle. Ultimately an employee having a poor personal life would adversely effect their performance and happiness in the work environment so the work/life balance was paramount.

Every employee from the CEO down to the receptionist worked a standard 9 to 5 day, if there was a requirement to work past 5 PM, then it was concluded that one of the following had happened;

1.The employee was not working efficiently and therefore needed additional hours complete the required work
2.That the employee was under resourced to complete the job, that the person should have enlisted the help of more people to ensure that the job will be completed within the assigned time parameters.
3.That the job assigned employee was not appropriate based on his level of expertise or skill set.

This was the watershed moment that changed Jack’s life forever.
Quite often we are caught up in life, through achievement, or upgrading/updating our stuff, bigger house, a new car, the latest and greatest home entertainment system, the newest phone etc.
We just sometimes need the catalyst to start the ball rolling.

Ultimately does all of this stuff or those achievements bring you happiness in life, or is it more about the people around you, the relationships that you have and what you give out to those around you in your local community.

Psychological belief and confidence in themselves helps to win AFL grand final

Monday, October 4th, 2010

With only the draw one week earlier, the combination of physiological and the psychological preparation helped Collingwood very convincingly win the grand final.

Psychological preparation

The belief and the confidence in themselves gave them the mental armory to crush St Kilda. The draw only a week early indicated that both teams were fairly evenly matched, ultimately it came down to the their belief system.

“We’ve got a very young group and they had the belief they could go all the way”

With the help of an AIS Professor Allan Hahn, using medical based recovery techniques and with their sports science director David Buttifant the players were subjected to ice baths and recovery sessions in the water.

Ultimately it came down to eliminating any doubt or hesitation that they would lose, that every member of the team could visualise the win.

With St Kilda, a similar situation happened last week when they were behind but they had the belief they they could win the Grand Final however only a week later history wasn’t to repeat itself as Collingwood maintained there mental and physical advantage over St Kilda.

Some players had no confidence in their kicking while their defence fell apart.

So not matter where you are at whether part of an elite sports teams or someone trying to achieve their weight loss goals, ultimately it comes down to your belief system for success.

Believing in yourself leads to Grand Final tickets

Friday, October 1st, 2010

It’s amazing sometimes with what you are thinking about can create opportunities or events you wouldn’t have expected or great things can happen.

Michael our North Fitzroy Fitstyler has been asking the North Fitzroy Fitmates about doing the weekly Thursday 7.15am morning run around Princes Park in Carlton, he has mentioned it on numerous occasions but decided to ask to clients personally on Wednesday morning.

Well this week Adam decided to do the run with Michael, (the first time I may add that a North Fitzroy Fitmate has done the run with Michael) and after a solid pace managed to get a quick lap time.

Later that day Adam called Michael and asked whether he wanted to go to the Grand Final, so whats so remarkable about this, or coincidental,

2.All the times Michael asked Fitmates to run around Princes Park
3.Michael asking Adam personally 3 days before the repeated Grand Final to go running
4.The fact the Adam wasn’t offered tickets to the first Grand Final last week
4.All the events that lead to Adam being in the right spot to be offered 2 tickets himself for premium seats.
5.The fact that Adam couldn’t find a person to sell the ticket to other than Michael.
5.The fact that the Grand Final has only drawn 3 times in over 100 years, the last time was in 1977 with Collingwood and North Melbourne
6.Michael mentioned that as a 12 year old boy that he predicted that in 2010 Collingwood would win the grand final, mmm lets wait until Monday to see if this happens

So while we may not believe in ourselves or what we can achieve, there are others who at either a conscious or sub-conscious level truly believe great things will happen.
Everyday we are confronted with choices about what path we take or direction we travel, by believing in yourself or about goals you wish to achieve can create these opportunities.

AFL grand final draw psychologically challenging

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

After last weekends AVL grand final draw, it’s going to psychologically challenging for both teams to maintain the energy and belief that they can win after the anti climax of a draw.

While both teams will be physically at their peak, granted with some injuries and fatigued muscles, the real challenge will be to have the mental strength to carry through with the game and win.

With the game last Saturday, even though St Kilda were behind in points, they made a comeback to equal the score as opposed to conceding defeat and giving up.

The real question is if one team takes an early lead, whether the other team will have the emotional energy and belief system to carry on.

Mentally they had pictured what was going to happen after the Grand Final, the ceremony if they won, the relief and the overwhelming feeling of success, the time away with their partner of family and achievement in reaching this awesome goal.

However after all the steps to achieve the goal were accomplished, it has lead to a need to re-evaluate their goals and create another step in the process.

It would be similar to what a person may go through say in a cycling event or marathon whereby they have miscalculated the finish line and focused entirely on finishing the race only to find out that they had another kilometer to go.

Mentally they would be devastated as they had given everything both mentally and physically to reach the destination only to find that the end point had moved or the goal posts had moved:))

After being at sea for 210 days, Jessica Watson miscalculated the distance to get the world record of 21,600 nautical but she continued on with the most treacherous seas experienced in the last leg of her journey.

So it will be interesting to see how the teams go with this psychologically challenging predicament.
