Latest Obesity report from Access Economics puts the cost at $21B, far greater than cost of Medicare due to productivity & health costs

Monday, June 1st, 2009

The additional strain & cost to the economy through the health system and lost productivity seems to be on an upward trajectory.

With so many resources and reports to battle obesity, we have now become the heaviest nation, passing the USA.

Alcopops tax must be effecting sales of pre mixed drinks as the Distillers have a half page newspaper ad, is the comparison realistic?

With binge drinking on an all time high & alcohol related violence at disturbingly high levels, any initiatives to reduce consumption is extremely positive.

Traditional style alcoholic beverages of beer, wine & bottled spirits weren’t as attractive to the palette of younger drinkers as sweet carbonated soft drinks with alcohol.

Recession buster tip #5 make your own jams, sauces & preserves. Ask your parents or grandparents about this forgotten skill

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

A great way to bulk buy foods in season and to store them for future use is preserving.
Our grandparents performed this lost art form, often growing their own fruit & vegetables & creating jams, chutneys, sauces and preserved fruits from the abundance of excess fruits & vegetables.

Often families would get together for the annual tomato sauce day where a dozen crates of fresh tomatoes are pulverised to create a 12 months supply of tomato sauce.
Not only is it fun but a great way of bringing the family together with a good old fashioned lunch to help get through the day of saucing.
Similarly I remember my grandmother making fantastic chutneys and preserved apricots and plums from the lovely old trees in her garden.

While the focus has been on terrorism, weapons of mass destruction & viruses, America’s greatest threat continues unabated: OBESITY

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

A frightening account of an emerging killer, OBESITY.
A more insidious threat has creeped into popular culture, more threatening than terrorism, weapons of mass destruction or viruses, obesity will continue unabated if not given serious priority by government.

Local Melbourne council proposes 5m smoking ban from children’s playground to stop effects of secondhand smoke, need to extend to all areas

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

With a proposed $2000 fine for offenders, councils are finally acknowledging what we have all known, the harmful effects of secondhand smoke from cigarettes.

One thing I find amazing about this story is that by introducing the 5 meter smoking ban, the council is acknowledging that cigarette smoke can travel in a horizontal plan. This second smoke is also dangerous to children but to any person within close proximity to a smoker, be it at a childrens playground, a pub, restaurant, cafe or any other public space.

This really needs to be extended to all public space whether outside or in, including open areas in restaurants & pubs.

Well done Moreland Council:)))
