Finally drinking water fountains are being introduced across Melbourne.

Keep hydrated fast with these water fountains at Melbourne Airport

While the bottled water industry would rather consumers drink bottled water, drinking tap water in Melbourne or any other capital city in Australia is perfectly safe and what’s more the water generally tastes great.

While it may be seem daggy and a bit tight arsey to refill your water bottle, it’s actually the smarter way to keep hydrated without consuming any unwanted toxins that are leech from the walls of the plastic bottled water, plus it saves you $$$.

With the price of bottled water being higher than petrol/litre, why do we keep handing over money to buy our water? With mortgage stress, that is where more than 30% of your household income goes towards the mortgage, why do we still spend our hard earned cash on something we almost get for free?

Flavoured water has high sugar levels and energy

Friday, May 7th, 2010

I saw an interesting advertisement in the Virgin Voyeur magazine for NW nutrient water advertising it’s super low calorie content.

High energy levels in water products with added flavours

“Naturally sweetened, super low calorie with only 23 calories per bottle ( if you always pass on dessert you’II know what we mean)”.

I find the whole flavoured water market very interesting, actually the bottled water market in general. What people don’t realise is that there are a lot of nasty toxins in the plastic but that’s another post.

What got me thinking is a beverage company admitting that there regular bottled water products are high in calories and sugar. By this I mean promoting another product in the same range that has 23 calories verses 258 says to me that there regular product is high in calories and sugar or as they say the equivalent to eating a dessert.
While a similar sized can of Coke has 10.6% sugar (63.6gms/600mls sugar), 258 calories, Nutrient Water’s other varieties contain 5% sugar (28.8gms/575mls), 115 Calories which is still relatively high considering tap water has ZERO sugar and calories.

One thing to think about when buying any beverage product, especially those aimed at the health conscious consumer is to look at the percentage of sugar by volume and the total amount of sugar.

Energy is energy and any unused energy is stored in the body, especially the tummy, butt and legs:(((

Beverage companies using scare tactics to reduce consumption of tap water, PR Firm contacts newspaper re E Coli in water

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

A leaked document purports that beverage companies are using scare tactics to reduce the consumption of tap water and increase the sales of bottled water.

Apparently some people from a PR company working with the Natural Hydration Council contacted a Scottish newspaper with information E Coli contamination in the water supply.
The Natural Hydration Council (NHC) whose founding members are , yes you guess it companies who would benefit from increased bottled water consumption, Danone Waters (UK & Ireland) Ltd, Nestlé Waters UK Ltd and Highland Spring Ltd.
They also have a sister website about You ought to drink more water, well that’s great but what is the home page cover shot promoting, general water consumption?

There premise is to effectively finds ways to help promote the consumption of bottled water siting environmental, health and other sustainable benefits so consumers can make informed decisions.
It would be intersting to see how extensive and objective there research is regarding the benefits of drinking tap.

I find this very strange stating an environmental benefit when the oil consumption for producing bottled water (excluding the transportation) is 17 million barrels or 3.5 days of the US’s daily oil consumption (4,950 ,000 barrels/day)

Selling bottled water is one the 20th centuries great strokes of marketing genuis, apart from created a multi billion dollar market that was non existent 25 years ago, we are encouraged to drink water constantly like we are walking in the Sahara desert without shade. “Quick Bob, don’t forget to take some water with you if you’re walking around for 30 minutes, you may get dehydrated” Although this sounds silly drinking water on the go is thoroughly encouraged.

Check out a great slide presentation of Why we shouldn’t drink bottled water.

So next time you reach for the wallet, have a think about what these beverage companies are doing to reduce the consumption of tap water.
