So, if your life is starting to resemble an episode of
Ramsey’s Kitchen and you’re finding it difficult to cope with the growing number of daily tasks at home and work, you may be a victim of the task epidemic cluttering up modern society and doing your head in.
A sure sign is how do you answer the following question. “Hi [firstname], how have you been?” I’m guessing you say, “BUSY!!!!” It is an all too common response when talking to work colleagues, friends and family, but when you think about it, who isn’t?
A vital part of being fit and healthy is relaxing and getting quality sleep so your mind can slow down, take a much needed break and re-energise itself.
The fact we’re not doing this enough is showing up in the increasing rates of insomnia and decreasing energy levels affecting lots of us. Instead of getting the rest we need, coffee consumption has soared and a host of energy drinks have popped up on the market to help us “overcome” fatigue and tiredness.
So what’s the answer?
There are lots of things you can do to unburden yourself of a few tasks. Take control of the clutter and, with practice, it’ll become easier over time and you’ll feel lots better for it. Why not try a few of these ideas to get started:
-Do something crazy, have a mobile free weekend and even a few nights during the week as well. When you walk out of the office, turn the mobile off; try it on a Monday night.
-Limit your social engagements; spend more time with your family and partner. It’s great catching up with five different friends a week but is this quality time or just quantity? I asked a client how her weekend was, and although “BUSY” was her reply, she enjoyed it all the same as she spent it catching up with friends she hadn’t seen in a while.
-Reduce your child’s weekend activities; running around town from 8am to 5pm carting your kids from sport A to hobby B not only wears you out but gives you less opportunity to spend quality time with them.
-Turn off your work email for an hour a day; you’ll be surprised at the increase in your productivity. Various
studies have shown that the average person can only successfully handle a few tasks simultaneously.
-Try only turning your home computer on every couple of days. Is there anything so urgent it must be attended to on a daily basis?
-Finally, don’t place too many expectations on yourself, try lowering the bar, let yourself go on the weekend. Read the paper, have a walk with the family in the local park, or maybe just do nothing, and really allow your mind to relax.
Don’t forget, weekends and holidays are for relaxing and enjoying, not just for preparing our bodies for work on Monday!
