 As we all know, it’s really important to keep fit and active with regular exercise. However, injury can occur. Knowing some basic first aid can help you manage basic sprains & strains.

Sprains and Strains

Sprains and strains occur when a ligament or tendon has been overstretched or torn. It can result in pain, swelling, tenderness and reduced movement at the joint. The best way to manage a soft tissue injury is with the R.I.C.E treatment protocol;

Rest

Ice
I Ice ImageAn ice pack should be applied for 15-20 minutes (5-10 minutes for children). The ice should be wrapped in a damp towel and applied over the injured area. Ice causes the blood vessels to constrict which minimises swelling and eases pain.

Compression
C Compression ImageUse a moderately firm, elastic bandage applied initially over the icepack to hold it in position and provide compression. When the icepack has been removed after 15-20 minutes the bandage should be reapplied. The circulation in the limb below the injury and bandage should be assessed for colour and sensation, and if the bandage is too tight then it should be removed and reapplied. Compression reduces swelling and bleeding at the injury site.

Elevation
E Elevation ImageElevation of the part assists in drainage and controls swelling by slowing the blood flow to the injured area.
