Soy is among the top eight most common foods that can cause a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) in some people,
particularly children

In most cases a soy allergy begins with a reaction to soy infant formula. Most kids outgrow it by the age of three, though
it may persist. Signs of a soy allergy usually occur within a few minutes to an hour. They include hives, itching, eczema,
swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

A soy allergy is caused by a malfunction in the immune system, which identifies certain soy proteins as harmful. For more information, see our special report on food allergies and intolerances.
