Echuca is a great place to explore over a long weekend. Just 2 hours from Melbourne you’ll pass some amazing historic towns on the way as well as great places to unwind amongst the trees and the meandering Murray River.
Where it all startedEchuca has a rich history harking back to 1850 when an ex-convict named Henry Hopwood established a punt across the Murray River.
Echuca was once the major hub for agriculture and industry in the Murray Darling River basin. The town boomed and experienced massive growth between 1865-1910 when a railway line from Melbourne to Echuca was established.
The river also provided a thoroughfare for those whose livelihood depended on getting their produce and timber to market. The famous Murray paddle steamers were the transport of choice, and their popularity lead Echuca to become the largest inland port in Australia.
