With signs that our usual summery weather isn't far away, try Stand Up Paddling (SUP). It may just be the answer to enjoying our lovely Melbourne beaches while spotting dolphins and penguins in their natural habitat.
A huge sports craze is sweeping the world. Stand Up Paddling (SUP) originated in Maui in Hawaii and involves standing on a larger version of a surfboard with greater buoyancy and stability while using a canoe-type paddle to navigate along the water.

The attraction of SUP is the amazing benefits it has for your core fitness. It’s relatively easy to learn and, most importantly, it's effective. And it’s already popular with athletes such as marathon runners or triathlon contestants looking for new forms of cross training.
Fortunately in Melbourne we have a sheltered, secure harbor that forms the ideal playground to experience this growing sport. SUP attracts children as young as 7 years old and upwards to young at heart 70 year olds.
The boards are extremely stable and offer the unique experience of exploring Port Phillip Bay, especially the penguin colony occupying the end of the breakwater. There are even regular sightings of dolphins intrigued by the spectacle of these funny creatures walking on water. It’s unlike any other type of water sport because you have total freedom to explore the coastal environment from a new perspective.
Many are also finding SUP a great alternative to traditional surfboards because you don’t need to paddle to the critical section of a wave to catch it. Instead, you can paddle out to any given swell and catch a ride back to the beach.
The explosion of this sport has created plenty of choice if you’re looking for teachers. Introductory lessons are usually between 1 to 2 hours per session and, depending on your level of confidence and skill set, you can limit your exposure to deeper water by staying withing the specific boundaries.
You can enjoy the sport in waist deep water, or venture out into the swell alongside kite surfers and windsurfers. All equipment is available, including Buoyancy vests, wetsuits and helmets. You can also acquire your own SUP board to enjoy on an ongoing basis.
During the warmer months you might want to get down to the beach early to secure your stand up paddle board as increased demands can create long queues as the day warms up.
