WARDY'S TRAINING TIPS

Hi and welcome to the first in the series of articles to help you prepare for the Holden High Country Cycle Challenge events. For those of you who are new to the event it truly is a great weekend. With appropriate preparation the week following should see you enjoying the “buzz” associated with you accomplishment.

My name is Steve Ward, and like for many of you July is a tough month in terms of sleep patterns. While it is still fresh in our minds the Tour can be a great inspiration to get out and get in some training.

The efforts of Simon Gerrans prove to one and all how powerful the mind can be. Beginning the world's toughest bike race with a respiratory infection is beyond the comprehension of most of us “mere mortals” and the idea of being in a position to attack is just incomprehensible to me.

Thankfully, the ride you are preparing for will be much more pleasant.

At this stage of your training you need to be working on a solid base.

Base training involves relatively low intensity training, low intensity in this instance means being able to chat comfortably to your training partners. The “tool” you use could be cycling, running, swimming (a bit tricky to chat, I know), or a group exercise class such as a circuit.

Low intensity training increases the ability of the body to deliver oxygen to the working muscles, and can be undertaken for a period of 6 weeks. It is important to recognise this is low intensity and not SLOW!

For those choosing to cycle for their base training, it is an ideal opportunity to improve your pedalling technique. You should be using a low gear (small chainring) and aiming at a cadence of 90 to 130 RPM. Cadence refers to the number of times the pedal rotates per minute. An easy way to do this is to count the number of times one knee rises in 20 seconds then multiply this number by 3. In the 20 seconds you should be aiming for a count of at least 30.

The following is a start for those interested in having a solid preparation for the HHCCC.
