The Cancer Council Victoria research about Obesity & Cancer
Our Obesity Prevention Campaign is based on new Cancer Council Victoria research. By sharing our findings with you through this campaign, we are hoping we can reduce the human cost of cancer in our community.

Why did The Cancer Council Victoria develop an obesity prevention campaign?
The research shows that a waistline of over 100cm for men, and 85cm for women, significantly increases the risk of some cancers. The strongest associations were for:

•  Colon cancer (male)
•  some cancers of the lower oesophagus
•  aggressive prostate cancer, and
•  cancer of the uterus.

It was also a strong indicator of risk of myeloid leukaemia.

Moderate associations were found for:

•  Colon cancer (female)
•  rectal cancer
•  kidney cancer, and
•  breast cancer (after menopause).

We hope that by raising awareness of the proven links between waist measurement and cancer risk, we are encouraging you to maintain or develop a healthy lifestyle that will help you reduce your risk of developing cancers.
