"My partner Samantha and I joined Fitstyler towards the end of last year with a view to losing a few extra kilos before our wedding at the end of February. Our other motivation was that we felt we weren't getting the right results from the gym.

Initially, we only committed to joining Fitstyler up to the wedding but we've enjoyed it so much that we've dumped our gym membership and will keep doing our boot camp sessions on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

We really like the variety in the sessions - especially boxing on a Tuesday night. In fact, we enjoy the boxing so much that we've bought our own equipment and do stuff on our own at other times of the week. We also enjoy the fact the sessions are not taken too seriously and are done at a pace that suits everyone.

The social aspect of Fitstyler is also great fun. Andrew makes a real effort to keep everyone connected and the couple of dinners we've been to so far we've really enjoyed.

Sally made it this morning, it was a very cool seven degrees, the leaves are falling off the trees, we’re sort of getting into the heart of winter, so Sally you’ve been with Fitstyler, just coming up to twelve months, what motivates you to keep coming back to our boot camp?  Especially what were your original goals?

My original goal was to lose weight and also to get a little bit fitter, I was sitting on a couch a lot and when I found Andrew’s group fitness classes on the website and I found that the group was fun, we get to do lots of different things …

Yeah.

… yes it can get colder in winter but you know, get over it (with a smile).  I think it’s just the people and also the trainers are a lot of fun, I mean sometimes they yell at us [laughing] …

… terms of you know, your weight loss and how you look and feel, have people commented or what’s happened there?

Yeah, well over the last probably twelve to eighteen months I’ve lost about fifteen kilos and during that period I have been coming to Andrew’s classes very regularly and I attribute a lot of it coming to Andrew’s classes very regularly, we do all sorts of different things and the trainers are pretty good in the sense that they, they know when to push you and when to ease up, also when I’ve got injuries, and so you’ve just got to keep doing it.

Yeah.

Yeah. And the fact is you know, you know every week you’ve got to make, this is an appointment sort of which just pushes you.
Boot Camp Trainer
Well that’s the whole thing, it’s like creating a habit …

Yes.

… and you know, that’s the hardest part you know, it’s just treating it like an appointment especially when you get, busy in your life. I mean it’s a beautiful morning, there is some blue sky somewhere behind the clouds, but it is cold, it is Saturday morning, people are at home and they’ve got plenty of doona time, however you’re out here, out in the cooler weather, so there has to be something that keeps driving you back …

Exactly.

… I remember when Andrew said and that the greatest distance that you travel is not the ten kilometres to get to bootcamp, it’s actually that six centimeters between your bed and the floor in the morning to get out of bed] [laughing] …

… it is quite cool, we can see by the trees that in the middle of winter.   Alright Pascal originally you came to Fitstyler, what were you looking to achieve? What were your list of goals?
Fitness Participant
I wanted to get fit, get into shape, tone up, and develop a habit of exercising regularly.
Boot Camp Trainer
And you also had a very specific goal, you wanted to run, you want to be able to run a specific distance
Fitness Participant
Yeah, I wanted to enter a fun run
Boot Camp Trainer
So  three to five ks.
Fitness Participant
I would like to be able to run three to five ks, I wanted to be able to run a lap around Princess Park in Parkville. Keeping it to a comfortably at a jog and I’ve achieved that, I can do that quite comfortably, one to two laps, which is good …

That’s awesome.
Fitness Participant
I’m not exhausted now every time I do a session, so I feel invigorated, I feel great.
Boot Camp Trainer
And in terms of your fitness, you mentioned that people have commented, what have they said in terms of your physical appearance?
Fitness Participant
Well, I look fitter, more toned and healthier. I’ve just got more and more stamina every day so it’s just good to get out there and meet people and exercise. It’s about it being fun, it’s not like being enclosed in a gym, you’re outside so you enjoy the parks and the spaces.
Boot Camp Trainer
And even just going back to the bootcamps, on Thursday night, one of the girls did a dance class and recreated the moved before we commenced the session I included all of these crazy moves as a warm up so that’s what it’s fun as well. It’s the social aspect and all our groups do have cafes and restaurants where people do go out socially afterwards. They have a great time as part of boot camp, which is that social aspect as well.

Yeah, the social aspect’s great and that’s what motivates you to keep coming back, because everyone’s really friendly and we have a laugh, and we enjoy our exercise, we don’t feel like it’s been a long hour session, it goes very, very quickly.

That’s awesome and that’s the hardest part and if there’s any message to take away to people that are looking at doing exercise, not necessarily Fitstyler boot camp but any sort of activity…be it an outdoor activity or any sort of exercise program, being a gym, or joining a health club, is it’s all about is making as Jacky said, it is about it being a priority and if you make it a priority, it’s like having a business appointment, you just do it, you don’t think about it …

… moving in, you know, into shelter, out of shelter, I mean how, how do you find it coming up, you think oh, it’s, you know, it’s six a.m. or half past five during the week or eight o’clock on a Saturday morning and you think, oh, it’s dark, it’s cold, you know …

That’s a good thing about group training, I, I, I think the other people sort of drag you along and …

… you know, once you’re here, you’re here and they sort of push you along and as I said, you have a bit of fun as you go and that sort of, the hour goes pretty, pretty quick you know, so, no it’s good.

And, and it’s certainly cold, I mean you can see the condensation as we speak …

You warm up in two minutes

… yeah, so the main thing is it’s not really that hard, I mean a lot of people find it is hard and it’s all about forming a habit, it’s almost like brushing your teeth, you don’t say one day, oh, will l brush, will I brush my teeth tonight or maybe I’ll let it go to the morning, and the morning comes, oh, I think I’ll brush my teeth tonight and so it’s all about that habit and when you just get to a point where, as Paul has, three years, you just get up, you do it, you feel great and then you , you’re done for the day, so it’s great

Yeah, I think you surprise yourself with how quickly you, you actually feel the improvement so the first couple of sessions might be tough but very quickly you feel better, it’s easier, you’re pushing harder …

And Paul’s amazing,, well it got to a point where I don’t train Paul anymore as I have other trainers, but , I actually wouldn’t run with Paul because thought that he’d out sprint me [laughing].

Yeah, sure, I mean there’s always newsletters and social events and dinners which is good and Christmas parties so it’s, it’s a social thing as well, it’s not just the, you know, the get fit side of it as well, but, and there’s always nutritional support and  guidelines and little tips and handy hints to keep fit, so that’s a nice side of it, an aspect that I like.
